Children’s New Bedford Bookfest happens in October

NEW BEDFORD, MA – Groundwork! Creative Space is hosting the Children’s New Bedford Bookfest on Saturday, October 28 and Sunday, October 29 from noon to 4:00 p.m. each day. The free, open to the public weekend event will feature regional children’s books authors and illustrators signing and selling their work.

“At previous New Bedford Bookfests held at Groundwork!, we recognized a great interest in a weekend devoted just to children’s books,” says bookfest co-founder Steven Froias. “So, we decided that our fall festival would spotlight just children’s authors for a change of pace.”

Groundwork! Creative Space is the city’s first co-working facility, located in the Quest Center at 1213 Purchase Street and is a former school – the New Bedford Textile School.

Co-founders of the co-working space, Sarah Athanas and Dena Haden, are also co-founders of the New Bedford Bookfest while Froias is a writer for Groundwork’s website,

Groundwork! also features an art gallery, overseen by Haden. So, the decision to also feature children’s book illustrators was an easy one to make. During the Children’s New Bedford Bookfest, 20 authors will bring their titles to the table while 10 artists will cover the walls of the facility’s Draper conference room.

Space is still available for both authors and illustrators to participate, and they should contact the organizers at for further information or sign-up here.

Another highlight of the ‘fest will be local students reading from selected works at an open-mic both days. As it is also the weekend before Halloween, kids in costume are welcome!
